A Note From MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHEY

From the Fall 1995 issue of The Trail Blazer Gazette:

Hello Friends and Partners!

The last few months have brought about major changes in my life. First of all, and most important, I became the adopted son of a Lakota Sioux medicine man named Guy Dull Knife. Guy was an old friend of 20 years. Many of you may recall that his picture appeared on the Blue Sky -- Night Thunder album. He inspired the song Medicine Man, Blue Sky Riding Song, and Night Thunder. Guy passed away in August (at age 96) but before he died he asked Guy Dull Knife Jr. to contact me to ask me to come to the funeral to receive his sacred feather and become his adopted son. My full name is now Michael Martin Murphey Dull Knife, but I will still use my original name as an entertainer, etc. There is a great book about the Dull Knife family available through Putnam Publishers called The Dull Knives of Pine Ridge written by Joe Starita. That's the best way to find out about my new adopted family. What an inspiring and courageous family.

Copper Mountain WestFest was a delight due to all of my new relatives who showed up. Some sang and some prayed and some just radiated joy. With the WestFest season over and three great WestFests behind us, I was able to take off from the road to enjoy the incredible fall foliage here in New Mexico. My song Palomino Days on the America's Horses album is about the golden leaves of a New Mexico autumn and a very special lady.

During my "down time" I went into high-gear with the staff to plan more WestFests (like the new one in Mammoth, California next August) and put together my Woodsmoke in the Wind concert series which will take place this winter in Taos County at venues like the Red River Inn, the St. James Hotel (it's haunted and a real wild west place), Ski Rio and Cuchara Ski Area in Colorado. These acoustic shows are my absolute favorite thing to do. I usually ski all day and play at night. It's a real working vacation at home! Come and join me in the best winter wonderland anywhere.

We also planned the upcoming Sagebrush Symphony television special on PBS to be taped live in Oklahoma City with The Oklahoma City Philharmonic on October 30, 1995. Herb Jeffries, the Sons of the San Joaquin and Hank Thompson will be joining me for the television version of my new Warner Western album. Look for it to air in many markets as a PBS "pledge" special in December and again nationally as a special Austin City Limits presentation in March. What a thrill!

Our Cowboy Christmas tour will have some musical and production surprises this year and runs for ten days at the Nugget in Sparks as a kick off. In many places we'll have props, a backdrop and falling snow on stage. See you when the weather gets a little chillier!

Cheers, Michael Martin Murphey
