I have no permanent antenna installation at my home QTH, so I set up my portable G5RV-style homebrew antenna in the backyard Friday afternoon, in preparation for a 5pm local start time. I started getting frustrated, because I wasn't hearing any signals with the antenna hooked up to the tuner, although the tuner tuned just fine to 1:1 in transmit. However, if I opened the connection to disconnect the ground, reception wasn't half bad. I spent Friday evening wondering how the antenna could possibly perform better with just the center conductor attached vs center & ground connections connected. When I woke up Saturday morning, I went out back to get a book, figuring my ham radio weekend was over. I look at the ground where the coax enters the house, and there, neatly coiled, was the coax that I never hooked to the antenna. Duh! The coax received fine with just the center conductor attached, but reception was poor when I grounded the shield!!! Well, I set up and decided to have a ham radio weekend after all. Worked some DX once I had an antenna hooked up! Had a lot of fun, and thanks to all who made the contest happen!
