SEDONA AREA DINING

Coffee Pot Restaurant. (928) 282-6626. 2050 W Hwy 89A, Sedona. Breakfast of Choice for locals and travellers alike. Coffee Pot greets patrons with an all-day breakfast menu and a bottomless cup of coffee. Named for the nearby Coffee Pot rock formation.

Mii Amo Cafe at Enchantment Resort. (928) 204-6000. 525 Boynton Canyon Rd, Sedona. Contemporary, eclectic cuisine combines regional flavors with healthy cooking techniques ... emphasizing a variety of grains, legumes, seasonal produce and fresh meats, seafood and poultry. The Juice Bar features a broad selection of energy drinks smoothies, wines and specialty beverages. A selection of light fare is offered poolside in season.

Olde Sedona Bar & GrillThumbs Down.  (928) 282-5670.  1405 W Hwy 89A, Sedona.  This bar appears very busy on weekends, so we thought we'd give it a try.  We found a menu with high prices, and less than stellar service.  It started when Rachel took our order.  I suggested that she might want to write our order down.  When she dismissed the suggestion, I asked her if she would remember our orders, and she replied "I'll certainly try"!  I ordered the Grilled Buffalo Brochettes, sans mushrooms, and a side salad.  A $10 Southwestern Burger and a $9 Caesar Salad were also ordered.  I got no side salad (Rachel forgot, good thing she forgot it on the bill, also), and my order was delivered complete with mushrooms.  The brochettes were good, once I removed the mushrooms.  Soggy fries accompanied the $10 burger, which was reported as unmemorable. $$$. (2010)

Orchards Bar & Grill(thumbs up!).  (928) 282-1661.  254 N Hwy 89A, Sedona.  We were shopping Uptown Sedona and decided to stop here for lunch.  We tried the Chile Rellenos, French Onion Soup and Caesar Salad.  Each were rather ordinary fare, good but not great.  Server aimed to please.  It's a better value at 20% off.  Get the coupon from one of the many "tourist information" booths that try to woo you into a timeshare presentation. $$.  (2010)

Red Planet Diner. (928) 282-6070. 1655 W Hwy 89A, Sedona. Quirky SciFi-themed 50s diner. Standard diner fare. With its flying saucer fountain out front and its totally cosmic decor, this casual diner is a UFO-spotters dream come true. Sip a mother-ship "vorttini" while you chow down on Flash Gordon chili, eggplanet parmigiana, moon loaf, a Roswell burger, Vulcan veggie burgers, or any of the other out-of-this-world dishes. The walls are plastered with photos of UFOs and images from old sci-fi movies.

Red Rock BBQ(thumbs up!).  (928) 204-5975.  150 Hwy 179, Sedona.  Unpretentious strip mall location, just south of the "Y".  Nice view of Sedona's Red Rocks.  Hickory-smoked BBQ.  We split a half rack of baby back ribs, since we weren't very hungry.  Nicely cooked, enough sauce on it to start with so didn't need more (although available at the table).  The server divulged they use "Sweet Baby Ray's" BBQ Sauce in the initial cooking.  The corn-on-the-cob side was hickory smoked also, very flavorful.  As do all good BBQ restaurants, plenty of napkins & towelettes.  Fantastic, enthused servers.  $$.  (2010)

René at Tlaquepaque. (928) 282-9225. 336 Hwy 179, Sedona. Voted "Best Place to Celebrate a Special Occasion" by Sedona Residents. Food, Wine, Art, Music. What more do you need?

Sedona Airport Restaurant. (928) 282-3576. 1185 Airport Road, Sedona. The airport is located on top of Airport Mesa (the road is well-marked off of Hwy 89 west of the Y) and the drive up alone is worth it for the view. The restaurant sits right next to the runway where small planes constantly land and take off. It's a very unassuming, casual place serving standard fare (with the Southwestern influence expected in Arizona).

Simon's Hot Dogs at the Oak Creek Brewing Company(thumbs up!).  (928) 496-0266.  2050 Yavapai Drive, Sedona.  We found it hard to believe that a hot dog restaurant could possibly be rated the best restaurant in Sedona on tripadvisor.com.  These skeptics are now converts!  This place is off the beaten path.  Simon's is right at the entrance to the bar.  Order your food and have a seat at the bar or outdoor patio.  Simon will bring your food to you.  The key to Simon's success resides in the remarkable taste combinations that he's come up with for his Gourmet Hot Dogs.  We had the Columbian (pineapple, mozzarella cheese, crushed potato chips, and Simon's secret spread), Hola Amigo (Creamy Avocado, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Jalapeño Peppers), and the Cowboy (Simon Family Recipe Chili with Mozzarella Cheese).  We ended up splitting the dogs in thirds so everyone could try them all.  Need to try the Tokyo Madness next time!  Simon also has Bratwurst & Chili on the menu. $. (2010)

Sizzler(thumbs up!).  (928) 634-3605.  1041 S Hwy 260, Cottonwood.   I know, it shouldn't be here, it's a chain restaurant. There isn't one in Tucson, and we wanted some comfort food after a long day hiking among the Red Rocks of Sedonal.  Sizzler did not disappoint.  $10 unlimited salad bar dinner, or add a buck and get some fried shrimp or a small sirloin steak with it.  The danger for me at a place like this is eating so much from the salad bar, that I am unable to eat the steak when it arrives.  I restrained myself ... this time. $$. (2010)

Tii Gavo at Enchantment Resort. (928) 204-6000. 525 Boynton Canyon Rd, Sedona. The casual restaurant at Enchantment with a more relaxed atmosphere. Be sure and explore the specialty drink menu with flavored martinis and signature drink -- a prickly pear margarita.

Yavapai Restaurant at Enchantment Resort. (928) 204-6000. 525 Boynton Canyon Rd, Sedona. Sedona's only AAA Four Diamond rated restaurant for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday Brunch. Your breath will be taken away by views of Boynton Canyon through massive windows providing a 180-degree view. Enjoy a sumptuous breakfast or delightful Jazz Brunch on Sundays. Lunch is for those who want to savor the view as well as the cuisine. In the evening, collared shirts are required dress code for gentlemen. Please, no jeans or athletic shoes.
